No 17 - Sui Following
To obtain a following, one must first know how to adapt oneself. If a man is to rule, he must first learn to serve, for only with this knowledge will he secure contented assent from those who are following. If he tries to obtain a following by force or cunning, or by conspiracy or by creating factions, he will arouse resistance which will obstruct willing adherence. However, a happy willingness to follow can only arise from a consistency in doing right. If you behave badly you cannot expect the willing cooperation from others. If people know you can be trusted to do what is right, they will be happy to follow your lead. The same principles apply where you expect to follow somebody else. You need to have confidence that the leader’s aims are for the greater good.
